All about Maxon Liftgate GPTLR
The Maxon GPTLR liftgate is part of Maxon’s TUK-A-WAY® Series and is engineered for dry freight body and trailer applications. It is designed specifically for carts and pallets, with a platform that remains level all the way to the ground and sits completely flat when lowered. This level ride design supports controlled loading and unloading without transition angles that can disrupt wheeled loads.
Capacity Options and Platform Configurations
The GPTLR series includes four models:
- GPTLR-25 – 2,500 lb
- GPTLR-33 – 3,300 lb
- GPTLR-44 – 4,400 lb
- GPTLR-55 – 5,500 lb
Platform configurations include:
- Aluminum 60" × 86" with 10" fixed ramp
- Aluminum 68" × 86" with 10" aluminum retention ramp
For 96" wide vehicles, platform width is 80".
The rated capacities must not be exceeded for these lift gates.
Level Ride Performance
Maxon describes the GPTLR as riding level “all the way to the ground, just like a rail liftgate.”
When lowered, the platform sits completely flat on the ground, allowing wheeled loads to roll on and off without elevation change.
The operation manual confirms standard raise/lower control using a toggle switch and outlines the correct loading sequence at ground and bed level.
Platform and Surface Construction
The GPTLR features a lightweight aluminum platform with:
- Recessed hinges
- MAX GRIP® slip-resistant surface treatment (standard)
- Dual assist torsion springs to minimize opening and closing force
The platform may also be equipped with cart stops or an aluminum retention ramp to help prevent wheeled carts from rolling off the outboard edge.
The operation manual provides detailed procedures for standard cart stops, back cart stops, and retention ramp configurations.
Structural and Safety Features
Standard and structural features include:
- ICC bumper (standard)
- Fully galvanized finish (standard)
- Cycle Counter (standard)
- Protected pump/motor assembly with cover and lockable steel collar
The pump and motor assembly, ie the power unit, is factory wired, installed, and shipped with oil in the reservoir.
The operation manual emphasizes correct stowing under hydraulic pressure before transport.
CMVSS Certified Rear Impact Guard Option (44 & 55 Models)
For GPTLR-44 and GPTLR-55 models, Maxon offers an optional CMVSS 223 certified rear impact guard.
According to the CMVSS brochure:
- Tested and certified to CMVSS 223 (Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards)
- Engineered to withstand three times the force and absorb four times the energy of conventional FMVSS certified guards
- Minimum laden bed height with CMVSS underride on GPTLR-44/55 models is 49"
Application Limitations
The GPTLR is designed for dry freight body and trailer applications only.
The brochure states it is not designed for flatbed, swing door, or refrigerated applications.
