Maxon GPC Liftgate Installation Planning Guide: Mounting, Wiring, and Testing

Installing a Maxon GPC liftgate requires coordinated planning for the vehicle structure, liftgate mounting arrangement, electrical system, platform alignment, and commissioning tests. The exact procedure depends on whether the unit is a GPC 17 X-1, GPC 22 X-1, GPC 33 X-4, or GPC 44 X-4 and on the vehicle and mounting configuration.

Confirm the Exact Liftgate Model Before Planning Installation
Installation planning must begin with the complete liftgate designation and the manual that applies to it. The GPC 17 X-1 and GPC 22 X-1 manuals cover separate X-1 lifting mechanisms, while the combined GPC 33/44 manual covers two X-4 models with model-specific dimensions and mounting drawings. The GPC 17 X-1 manual separates the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, Ford Transit, and C-frame installation arrangements. No mounting dimension, adapter arrangement, lift-arm value, or body-clearance requirement should be transferred from one model or vehicle arrangement to another unless the applicable Maxon instructions expressly support it.
Personnel and Safety Requirements
Maxon limits the installation and commissioning tasks in these manuals to qualified and trained personnel, and this instruction must be followed to prevent the warranty from being voided and other issues. It is also required to use personal protective equipment and to comply with applicable legal, operational, occupational-safety, environmental, vehicle-manufacturer, and chassis-manufacturer requirements. Personnel performing the work must use protective goggles, work gloves, and protective footwear. Also, personnel must work at an appropriate height and body position to avoid unusual working positions. Before installation:
- Disconnect the vehicle battery.
- Secure the vehicle against unintentional shifting.
- Disconnect plugs for electronic systems, such as ABS, before welding.
- Protect fuel lines, brake-system air hoses, and cables in the installation area.
- Confirm that cranes, forklifts, pallet trucks, and other required lifting equipment have sufficient capacity.
- Check that the safety devices on the lifting and transport equipment function correctly.

There are hazards associated with the vehicle's electrical supply, high-pressure hydraulics, moving components, crushing points, and areas where people, clothing, or hair could be caught or pulled into moving parts that must be considered. Electrical wiring, hydraulic components, and hydraulic hoses must not be damaged or modified. If an installation requires a modification to the liftgate or a deviation from Maxon’s installation directions, written approval from Maxon must be obtained first. The manuals state that unapproved modifications and deviations can cause failure, operating interruptions, and hazards, and can void the warranty. Safety equipment and product labels must not be modified, removed, or covered. Installation planning must therefore account for qualified personnel, suitable equipment, a controlled work area, and strict compliance with the exact Maxon and vehicle manufacturer instructions.
Inspecting the Liftgate After Delivery
The liftgate should be inspected before vehicle preparation or permanent installation work begins. Transportation damage and mishandling can affect both the installation schedule and the condition of the lifting mechanism.
The liftgate must be checked for transportation damage when it arrives. Any transportation damage must be recorded on the waybill so a claim can be raised. During unpacking and movement:
- Secure loose and heavy parts.
- Remove transport locks carefully because parts of the platform may fall or tip.
- Store unpacked components in a secure manner.
- Use transport equipment with sufficient load-carrying capacity.
- Confirm that the transport equipment operates correctly.
- Transport the lifting gear upright using suitable lifting points to reduce the risk of oil leakage.

The manuals also warn not to perform any lifting on the power pack, apply pressure or shocks to it, or use pry bars against it. All Maxon GPC variants have their power packs filled with oil at the factory. The arrival inspection should be completed before damaged or improperly handled equipment is introduced into the installation process.
Verify Vehicle Compatibility and Mounting Dimensions
Vehicle compatibility must be verified from the exact model drawing and the chassis or vehicle manufacturer’s current installation guidelines. The Maxon manuals do not present one universal GPC mounting envelope.
All three manuals require compliance with the chassis or vehicle manufacturer’s instructions. If the vehicle has a trailer hitch, the installer must ensure clearance between the hitch shaft or axle and the liftgate and must account for the vehicle’s overall length. Important planning measurements can include:
- Vehicle bed or floor height
- Loaded and unloaded mounting dimensions, where shown
- Vehicle-frame and auxiliary-frame arrangement
- Ground clearance
- Lift-arm space
- Clearance behind the body
- Rear-sill or end-crossmember dimensions
- Frame width
- Trailer-hitch clearance
- Space for brackets, adapters, the bumper bar, and cable routing
For the GPC 17 X-1, Maxon provides separate vehicle and auxiliary-frame relationships for the Sprinter, Transit, and C-frame installations. For the GPC 22 X-1, the installation chart identifies the specific lift-arm length, maximum and minimum vehicle-floor values, the permitted top-of-main-beam-to-ground range, the top-of-main-beam-to-floor range, and the required space behind the vehicle body. For the GPC 33 X-4 and GPC 44 X-4, the dimension table lists different lift-arm lengths, maximum bed heights, vertical mounting ranges, and rear-clearance ranges. Compatibility planning is complete only when the actual vehicle measurements have been checked against the correct model drawing and any special Maxon assembly drawing supplied for the installation.
Vehicle Preparation
Vehicle preparation clears the mounting area and establishes the required body, rear-sill, rear-frame, and subframe conditions. Cutting or permanently modifying the vehicle before confirming the applicable drawing can create an incorrect or structurally unsuitable mounting area.
The installer must remove the identified rear components and clear the mounting-bracket area of interfering U-shaped brackets, other brackets, rivets, spare wheels, couplings, hinges, locks, and lights as applicable. Appropriate coverings are recommended to prevent vehicle damage. The subframe must be installed according to the chassis manufacturer’s instructions and manuals. Rear-sill and rear-frame requirements differ by model:
- The GPC 17 X-1 manual states that openings are required when the rear sill in the lift-arm area exceeds the stated dimension. It also directs the installer to restore suitable reinforcement to maintain the sill’s structural integrity after a cutout is made. - The GPC 22 X-1 manual uses the H1, H2, H3, and H4 dimensions to determine the rear-sill arrangement. If the sill is cut for the lift arms, the cutouts must be reinforced to maintain structural integrity. (Maxon-GPC-22 X-1-Installation-Manual-rev-051023-2021.pdf, p. 11.)
- The GPC 33/44 manual provides a rear-frame cutout recommendation and identifies separate GPC 33 X-4 and GPC 44 X-4 lift arm information. It instructs the installer to provide cutouts if the end crossmember in the lift-arm-stop area is higher than the dimension stated in the table. The GPC 17, GPC 22, and GPC 33/44 cutout drawings and dimensions must remain separate. No cutout value should be copied from one model section into another installation.
Spacer Bar and Body Interface Planning
The documented spacer establishes the relationship between the vehicle body and the stowed platform. Its placement also affects the mounting fixture and final bumper locations.
The GPC 17 X-1, GPC 22 X-1, and GPC 33/44 manuals state that a 1/2-inch spacer is installed on the body. The spacer is normally used except when the liftgate is installed behind swing doors. The spacer-kit procedure identifies the kit with part number 211915-01. The installer is to install the steel spacer bar before liftgate installation, position it horizontally at bed height, use it as the drilling template, remove burrs and sharp edges, and secure it with the supplied hardware. The exact truck-width and drilling instructions must be taken from the applicable spacer-kit page. The bumper steps use the stowed and unstowed platform positions to establish the bumper locations on both sides of the body. The GPC 22 spacer-kit page expressly labels the bumper step as occurring after liftgate installation. For all three mounting-fixture procedures, the fixture is positioned tightly against the installed 1/2-inch spacer before it is welded or clamped in place. The spacer, mounting fixture, body opening, and stowed platform should therefore be planned as one interface rather than as independent installation items.
Mounting Structures, Stabilizer Bars, Bumper Bars, and Fixtures
Each GPC installation uses model-specific structures to position and attach the lifting mechanism. The correct stabilizer or synchronizer assembly, bumper bar, adapter, flange bracket, mount fixture, or assembly jig must be available before the liftgate is placed under the vehicle.
GPC 17 X-1
The GPC 17 X-1 stabilizer/synchronizer bar must be mounted before the liftgate is installed on the truck body. During assembly, the mounting brackets are installed loosely, the lifting mechanism is secured, the lift arms are raised in the documented order, and the synchronizer bar is assembled. The GPC 17 mount fixture is centered to the measured body opening, positioned tightly against the 1/2-inch spacer, and used with the platform pins to center the liftgate on the truck body. (Maxon-GPC-17 X-1-Series-11-Installation-Manual-rev-04-2021.pdf, p. 15.)
The GPC 17 manual provides separate adapter instructions for:
- Mercedes-Benz Sprinter
- Ford Transit
- Vehicles with a C-frame

For the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Ford Transit configurations, the installation adapters are bolted to the vehicle frame and auxiliary frame according to the appropriate mounting-measurement drawing. For the C-frame configuration, the adapter is welded according to the C-frame measurement drawing and the weld requirements. The correct vehicle adapter and its associated drawing are essential parts of the GPC 17 installation plan.
GPC 22 X-1
The GPC 22 X-1 synchronizer bar must be installed on the lift arm before the liftgate is installed on the truck body. The mounting brackets are positioned to the measured vehicle-frame width and initially hand-tightened. After assembly, the arms must be checked for even positioning on both sides, and the adjustment fork must be readjusted if required. The mounting fixture is centered on the rear sill and positioned tightly against the 1/2-inch spacer. The platform pins are then used to align the liftgate arms with the fixture. (Maxon-GPC-22 X-1-Installation-Manual-rev-051023-2021.pdf, p. 13.)
The lifting mechanism is placed under the vehicle, pinned to the fixture, and raised while the documented E and D dimensions are maintained. The installer is to keep the E dimensions equal on both sides and, as a general rule, maximize ground clearance while remaining within the permitted E dimensions. The mounting plates are initially tack-welded. Final welding occurs only after the liftgate has been tested through its full motion for alignment without powering it against the rear sill or placing weight on the platform. (Maxon-GPC-22 X-1-Installation-Manual-rev-051023-2021.pdf, p. 17.)
The GPC 22 mounting sequence makes alignment and movement verification prerequisites to final attachment.
GPC 33 X-4 and GPC 44 X-4
The GPC 33/44 manual requires the bumper bar to be assembled before the liftgate is installed on the truck body. It provides a separate mounting-bracket and bumper-bar assembly drawing for the GPC 33 X-4 and a separate drawing for the GPC 44 X-4. The flange brackets are moved to match the vehicle-frame width. The brackets can be installed after the lifting gear has been positioned under the chassis, and the installer can tighten the bolts according to the torque table. The alternative assembling-jig procedure identifies a different jig for each model:
- Part No. S 20 908 520 for the GPC 33 X-4

Because the bumper drawings, dimensions, and jig part numbers differ, the GPC 33 and GPC 44 mounting plans must remain separately identified.

Welding Planning and Precautions
Permanent welding should not begin until the lifting mechanism has been positioned, secured, dimensionally verified, and checked against the exact mounting drawing. Welding requirements must be taken from the applicable model manual rather than reduced to a universal GPC weld pattern.
The weld sections instruct personnel to:
- Disconnect the battery power while working under the vehicle body.
- Prevent the liftgate from moving out of position.
- Never operate the liftgate with a loaded platform until the mounting plates are completely welded to the vehicle frame.
- Check whether vehicle-body modification is needed to access the battery cable from the main-frame housing.
If a hole in the vehicle frame prevents one continuous vertical bead, the weld can be divided above and below the hole, provided that the combined vertical weld length meets the documented minimum. The installer must comply with the vehicle manufacturer’s installation guidelines, and welding should be performed in accordance with AWS welding standards. Underbody coating must be removed from the mounting contact areas, and exposed vehicle areas must be resealed with corrosion protection. The installer must consult the model-specific drawing for the required weld locations, dimensions, and attachment arrangement.
Electrical Installation Planning
Electrical planning should be completed before permanent attachment makes a cable path inaccessible. The installation plan should account for the battery connections, main fuse, power cable, cabin switch, control panel, platform harness, foot control, where fitted, and optional cable remote.
Improper connection to the vehicle battery can cause a short circuit and battery explosion. The installer must follow the vehicle manufacturer’s battery-handling instructions, protect cables from chafing, and keep cables away from heat-dissipating components. Excess cable must be placed in slings rather than wound into a coil, and the route must prevent rubbing or pinching. For the GPC 22 X-1, the battery cables and the identified cab shutoff cable can be shortened, but other liftgate cable harnesses must not be cut and spliced. (Maxon-GPC-22 X-1-Installation-Manual-rev-051023-2021.pdf, p. 26.)
In the Series 11 arrangement:
- The foot-control cable set inside the platform has been factory tested.
- After platform installation, the cable set from the central power unit is secured along the lifting arm so it cannot rub or become pinched.
- The control unit and service switch are preassembled inside the power unit.
- Connections are made to the cabin switch, main control panel, platform, and optional cable remote.
- Supplied cable straps are used to secure the cables to the liftgate.

For the illustrated 12-volt configuration, the manuals show a 250-amp fuse. The installer must attach the fuse kit to the battery positive, route the positive cable from the battery to the power unit and motor relay, and connect the power unit's positive and ground cables directly to the battery. Vehicle manufacturer guidelines must be followed. For both X-1 models, the open platform is moved hydraulically behind the body sill. During adjustment, the lift arms must not touch the sill, and a 3/8-inch space is established between the sill and lift arms. The lifting mechanism is adjusted until the rear frame and platform are parallel, after which the synchronizer-bar fasteners are tightened. For closed-position adjustment on the GPC 17 and GPC 22, the platform is closed hydraulically. The GPC 17 and GPC 22 adjustment fork is located on the right lift arm. It is used when necessary, so both lift arms contact the body sill at the same time. After the adjustment, the adjustment-fork bolt must be securely tightened. The lift-arm heads must stop against a flat, firm rear-frame surface. The installer must fill in interfering edges and reinforce the rear-beam area where necessary to prevent crushing under hydraulic pressure. For the GPC 33 X-4 and GPC 44 X-4, the platform-installation chart provides different A and B dimensions for the two models. Closed-position alignment on the X-4 models uses the connecting rod. If the platform presses against the vehicle body before the cylinder reaches its mechanical stop, the platform is opened 10 to 15 degrees to unload the cylinder, and the connecting-rod length is adjusted. Tilt-Sensor Programming and Platform Inclination
Series 11 platform inclination is programmed after installation or repair once the platform has been placed in the horizontal position. The programming stores the platform position used during subsequent operations.
The installer must place the platform horizontally and enter the documented control-panel button sequence. Each button sequence must be completed within two seconds. The flashing light switches off for five seconds to indicate successful programming, and the selected position remains stored until the sensor is reprogrammed.
