Maxon TE-Series: Smarter Design, Easier Repairs

Maxon TE Series Smarter Design Easier Repairs blog banner

When it comes to liftgate design, small engineering details can have a big impact on usability, maintenance, and long-term performance. Maxon’s TE-Series liftgates — including the TE-20, TE-25, TE-30, and TE-33 models — demonstrate this philosophy through one key design approach: bolt-on components.

This article breaks down how the bolt-on steps and extension plates found across the TE-Series contribute to simpler installations, easier repairs, and preserved factory finishes — especially for galvanized models.

Maxon’s Documentation Resources

Information in this article is sourced from Maxon’s manuals and technical guides. Always refer to your specific liftgate’s manuals for complete procedures and serial number, model, and year-specific details.

Bolt-On Extension Plates: Avoiding Weld Damage

All tuckaway liftgate TE models by Maxon are designed with bolt-on extension plate options. According to the TE-20 installation manual (M-16-33, Rev D), the extension plates can be either welded or bolted onto the vehicle. However, Maxon specifically recommends bolting when galvanized components are used:

"To preserve the corrosion resistance properties of the galvanized finish, MAXON recommends bolting the galvanized extension plate to vehicle." (Page 19)

This design choice ensures installers can preserve the protective galvanized coating, preventing future rust issues often introduced by welding.

Additionally, Maxon provides complete hole layouts for both 96" and 102" wide extension plates, simplifying bolt-on installs. These pre-defined hole patterns save time and eliminate guesswork.

Bolt-On Steps: Damage-Resistant and Replaceable

Dock damage and curb contact are common liftgate hazards. Maxon anticipates this by offering bolt-on steps for the TE-Series, including TE-20, TE-25, TE-30, and TE-33 models. The TE-20 sales sheet states:

"The steps and extension plates were strategically designed to bolt-on (option) in order to avoid welding on the gate that would affect the factory paint or galvanized finish. The steps were also designed as an integral part of the gate that would easily allow for them to be exchanged in case of dock damage." (TE-20_F1.8-CV-011224)

This modular approach allows operators or service centers to replace damaged steps without reworking the liftgate frame, welding or repainting. For fleets with frequent loading dock contact, this design feature reduces downtime and repair costs.

The TE-33 documentation also supports this:

"The steps and extension plates were strategically designed to bolt-on in order to avoid welding on the gate that would affect the factory paint. The steps were also designed as an integral part of the gate that would easily allow for them to be exchanged in case of dock damage." (TE-33-M194-D1.4-CV-12-20-23)

Modular Platform Adjustment and Replacement

Beyond steps and extension plates, Maxon also designed the TE-Series platforms for in-field adjustment and service. For example, the TE-20 installation manual outlines a clear process for adjusting the platform angle at ground level. If the shackles or tip of the flipover do not touch the ground evenly, operators can either weld shims to the shackles or grind the platform stops to correct the angle. Specific measurements and shim thickness tables are provided to guide this process. (M-16-33, Pages 58–60)

Torsion spring replacement is also streamlined. On both TE-20 and TE-33 models, the torsion spring is mounted to the platform hinge via a pin secured with a roll pin. This allows the spring to be removed and replaced using basic tools without major disassembly. Instructions include diagrams showing proper alignment and securing of the spring. (M-16-35, Pages 21–22; TE-33 Maintenance Manual, Pages 18–20)

Maxon also provides bolt hole alignment tables and bracket positioning options for platform openers depending on platform size and bed height. This ensures a consistent fit across vehicle types without requiring fabrication or custom measurements. (TE-20 M-16-33, Page 56)

These design details, while often overlooked, make a significant difference in reducing time spent on liftgate adjustments and extending component lifespan.

Preserving Factory Finish: A Galvanized Advantage

Several TE-Series models, including TE-20, TE-25/30, and TE-33, are available in an optional galvanized finish. This coating provides high resistance to corrosion, especially in wet or salted environments.

To maximize that protection, Maxon emphasizes using bolt-on installation methods wherever possible:

  • TE-20: "MAXPRO® Paint or GALVANIZED Finish" and bolt-on accessories preserve finish.
  • TE-33: The bolt-on design complements the optional galvanized finish to help the gate "stay looking like new."

These factory finishes, paired with a no-weld bolt-on strategy, help protect long-term value, particularly for fleets operating in harsh conditions.

Conclusion

From the TE-20 to the TE-33, Maxon’s TE models showcase a thoughtful design that supports practical fleet maintenance. By enabling bolt-on extension plates and steps, Maxon Liftgate simplifies installation, reduces the risk of corrosion, and makes component replacement straightforward.

With clearly documented procedures for platform angle adjustment, torsion spring replacement, and component servicing, the TE provides fleet operators and technicians with everything they need for effective long-term support. These design choices offer real-world advantages that go beyond lifting capacity or platform size, emphasizing durability, ease of service, and reduced downtime.
